Akıncı: “We had a very fruitful and comprehensive meeting with Kerry”
President Mustafa Akıncı and the US Secretary of State John Kerry had a very fruitful and comprehensive meeting regarding the future of Cyprus yesterday.
Following his meeting with Kerry, Akıncı made a press statement. In his statement, Akıncı stressed: “The US has proved once more that they are willing for the solution of the Cyprus issue and also decided to help us to solve the Cyprus problem. I am very pleased for the meeting.”
Furthermore, Akıncı added that the US support in such a process is very important in terms of providing stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkish-Greek relations, Turkish-European relations and also in terms of developing the relations of the United Federal Cyprus with Turkey.
Kerry: “I believe in a solution much more than ever”
The US Secretary of State John Kerry who paid a one day official visit to Cyprus yesterday stated that he believes in a solution much more than before in Cyprus.
Kerry stated that as the US, they will continue to support both leaders in Cyprus and also give technical and financial support for the solution process.
Expressing that he met with the two leaders in New York in September and had encouraging telephone conversations with the two leaders many times, Kerry said that the last months have shown that the solution atmosphere has started to change in a good way. Kerry also expressed that a good development has been achieved in negotiations and he is much more hopeful for a solution now.
Furthermore, Kerry said that the US is ready to give all technical and financial support for a solution in Cyprus.
Leaders to meet today
The Leaders are meeting again today.
President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades are going to meet again in the buffer zone today.
Following the meeting, the UN is not expected to make a joint statement on behalf of the leaders.
The last meeting of Akıncı and Anastasiades was held on November 25th, 2015.
Anastasiades: “Meeting with Kerry was positive and fruitful”
The Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades qualified his meeting with the US Secretary of State Kerry as “positive and fruitful”.
According to the Greek Cypriot news sources, following his meeting with Kerry, Anastasiades made a statement on his twitter account and stated that they discussed bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem and regional problems at the meeting.
Özgürgün met with Eide
National Unity Party leader Hüseyin Özgürgün met with the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide.
Issues about the Cyprus negotiations were discussed at the meeting. UBP leader Özgürgün shared his opinion about the negotiation chapters with Eide.
Brakel: “Positive signals about the Cyprus negotiations”
German Council of Foreign Relations (DGAP) expert Christian Brakel indicated that there are positive signals about the Cyprus talks and some important results can be obtained in the summer months. Brakel said: “This will also be useful for Turkey’s EU process. If there will be no improvement on the Cyprus negotiations there is a risk to get into a vicious circle again.”
Brakel also made evaluations about the relations between the EU and Turkey. Indicating that Turkey’s interest towards the EU membership and reforms has decreased in comparison with before 2007, Brakel stated that the Cyprus problem is continuing to be one of the biggest challenges for the future of the process.
Hrisostomos II: “We love Muslims but they come after us”
The Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church Hrisostomos II said, “We love Muslims but they come after us.”
According to the news of the Greek Cypriot daily Fileleftheros, after his meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Hrisostomos II said, “We had a very nice meeting, I explained to Lavrov that the original inhabitants of the Middle East are the Christians.” Furthermore, Hrisostomos II added that: “The Arabs came after us in the 7th century. Minorities cannot be allowed to stay instead of the original inhabitants. We love Muslims, we want to live together, we lived together for centuries but we condemn radicalism, we do not want radicalism to dominate. We support the position of the Russian Government because if the radicals and the minorities in the Middle East become hegemony, the Christians cannot live in their ancestors’ land.”
Hahn: “No need to think about the Plan B, we must consider the Plan A”
European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn stated that he is optimistic about the negotiations in Cyprus and said, “There is no need to think about the Plan B, the Plan A must be considered.”
European Union Affairs Minister and Chief Negotiator of Turkey Volkan Bozkır held a joint press conference after his meeting with the European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.
Upon a question whether the EU has a second plan in the absence of an agreement in Cyprus, Hahn said, “I am optimistic about the negotiations in the island, therefore there is no need to think about the ‘Plan B’, the ‘Plan A’ must be considered.”
