Almost 200 walkers, turned out last Sunday to take part in the Kumyalı Nature Walk for Special Children which raised an incredible TL4,075 for the project

Two enthusiastic walkers

The majority of walkers opted for the 8km route but some stalwarts went the whole 16km distance and on a very hot day everyone completed their personal challenge without injury.

The Mayor of Mehmetçik, Cemil Sarıçizmeli, whose help with the organization of the event was central to its success, walked on the day with his wife and some of his extended family and he said: “This was a great event and I hope it will become an annual event which will get bigger and better each year. My thanks to all those who helped organize the day and all those who walked.”

Art Watson, one of the organizers said: “The children of Ziyamet School deserve the best.  They have a good school with excellent inside equipment but they have nowhere to play outside which is why it is so important we raise as much as we can to make the play area outside a safe and enjoyable place for the children.”

The walkers were delighted to be entertained by a dance troupe before they set off and those who had booked went on, after the walk, to the Nitovikla Garden Hotel for a meal and a swim for those who were brave enough.

Thanks go to the Mayor of Mehmetçik, Cemil Sarıçizmeli and his team, CESV members, Michelle Martin BRS, Pam Kennedy, EFRAR members, LSOK, Creditwest Bank, Cyprusscene, Zekai Altan whose family and friends worked tirelessly to ensure the day ran smoothly, and most importantly to the parents and children of Ziyamet School who came along, walked and supported the event.
