Leaders to meet today

President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades will meet today within the framework of negotiations continuing to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

President Mustafa Akıncı will also receive the UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide today.

The Akıncı-Eide meeting will start at 16:00 at the Presidency today.

‘Secret meeting’ between Mavroyannis and Karoyan

It was stated that the Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyannis had a secret meeting with DIKO’s former leader Marios Karoyan and the intra-party opposition wing and informed them about the negotiations.  It was noted that this meeting with the dissidents disturbed the current administration of DIKO.

According to the Greek Cypriot daily Politis, Mavroyannis particularly called the intra-party opposition members to the meeting which was held at DIKO’s former leader Karoyan’s office. During the meeting, Mavroyannis informed about the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and exchanged views regarding establishing a new party under the head of Karoyan.

Greek House of Representatives: “Threat and danger discourses coming from North are false”

The report of the committee established by the Greek House of Representatives in order to investigate the ‘1967-74 Cyprus tragedy’ which was approved in  the General Assembly of the Greek Parliament in 1986 was given wide coverage by the Greek Cypriot newspaper Fileleftheros. The newspaper stated that the report entitled the ‘Cyprus File’ including the information related to ‘15 and 20 July 1974’ was evaluated and the reporters concluded that the threat and danger discourses from the North are false.

In the report it was emphasized that the origin of the Cyprus problem predates 1967-74, therefore, many difficulties and obstacles had been faced while the research was done and that “The Minister of Justice has the right to initiate or suspend the criminal proceedings with the decision of the Council of Ministers regarding the political and other crimes that could impair international relations of the state (Criminal Law Article 30, paragraph 2).”

The newspaper added that the missing report named as the “Cyprus File” was also published on the Greek American News Agency website: “greekamericannewsagency.com” on 2 September 2014.

Ersan Saner announces candidacy

Hamza Ersan SanerThe National Unity Party (UBP) Gazimağusa Member of Parliament Hamza Ersan Saner has announced that he will be running for the post of party leadership at the upcoming party congress to be held on the 31st of October.

Speaking at the meeting, Saner said that he was running for the leadership to bring real change to the country by carrying out politics with principles.

1st September World Peace Day will be celebrated in front of the Home for Cooperation

Various Turkish and Greek Cypriot organizations are jointly organizing events on 1 September World Peace Day.

PEO, DEV-IS, KTAMS, KTOEÖS, KTÖS, BES, TÜRK-SEN unions and the Bi-communal Peace Initiative  will be convening at the buffer zone in front of the Home for Cooperation  where an event will be held at 19:00. Within the framework of the celebrations, a concert by Turkish composer Zülfü Livaneli and Greek singer Maria Faranduri, who are known for their pro-peace works, will be held on the 18th of September at the Çetinkaya football pitch.

Joint meeting of CTP and AKEL on World Peace Day

CTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat and AKEL Secretary General Andros Kiprianu are going to meet today, on 1 September World Peace Day, at CTP party headquarters. Prior to today’s meeting, the delegations of the two parties met at AKEL headquarters yesterday.

At yesterday’s meeting held under the chairmanship of CTP member Muhittin Özsağlam and AKEL Politburo member Christos Christophides, views were exchanged about what should be done to bring the two sides closer during this peace and resolution process.

The meeting lasted about two-hours. CTP Party Council and Foreign Relations members Aybike Yektaoğlu and Ali Gülle and AKEL party authorities Elias Demetriou and Toumazos Tsielepis were present at the meeting.

Government measures against currency crisis

The government which is continuing its studies regarding the increase in the foreign currency exchange rates has taken some measures. Within this framework the foreign currency exchange rates used for taxation and funds are being frozen for 90 days.

Making important statements ahead of the Council of Ministers meeting with regard to the increase in the foreign currency exchange rates, Prime Minister Kalyoncu said that in order to prevent difficulties in tourism and education sectors, the foreign currency rates have been fixed for the next 90 days.

Emphasizing that the fixed foreign currency rates will be used for the import transactions such as food, clothing, electric appliances, medicine and agricultural fertilizers. Kalyoncu stated that things like cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, motor vehicles and fuel products are excluded.
