Groovy Historian: Why Is

Cyprus So Important Vodcast?

by the Groovy Historian….

Hey there, this is the groovy historian : In this Vodcast I will be talking about Cyprus and looking at why it has remained so important over the centuries.

The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Cyprus was settled by Mycenaean Greeks in two waves in the 2nd millennium BC. Cyprus being at a strategic location in the Middle East, it was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians, Cyprus Mapfrom whom the island was seized in 333 BC by Alexander the Great. There followed occupation and rule by Ptolemaic Egypt, the Classical and Eastern Roman Empire, Arab caliphates for a short period, the French Lusignan dynasty and the Venetians. The Ottomans then occupied and ruled the island from 1571 and 1878.

Cyprus was placed under British administration on 4th June 1878 and then formally annexed by Britain on 5th November 1914, in response to the Ottoman government’s decision to participate in World War 1 alongside the Central Powers. Independence was granted by the British administration in 1960 and Cyprus formed its own government but following a period of inter-communal fighting, the island was and has remained divided following a peace intervention operation by Turkey in 1974, one of the guarantor powers, and awaits a political settlement to see it become united again.
