The Creditwest North Cyprus Cricket T20 League games are becoming a popular place to be, with over 100 people enjoying two outstanding matches last Sunday at Girne’s Pia Bella Stadium.

The 2^nd round of League games first saw Cyprus Lions play Cyprus All Stars. It went as the form book with the Lions struggling, being bowled out for 138, chasing the strong All Stars side’s impressive 159 for 4. The Lions picked up 4 bowling and 3 batting points, whilst the winners got the maximum 30.

In the afternoon, local side Girne took on outsiders Taşkınköy. The visitors had struck an average total of 142, which the experienced Girne should have comfortably reached, but with 3 still needed from the last ball, they couldn’t get over the winning line. Immediately after the enthralling contest, shocked Girne team manager Danish Afridi said, “Girne who top pool group B and many people’s favourite for the title, lacked sparkle and were totally unfocused”. Taşkınköy took 30 points for winning, but Girne’s 3 batting and 10 bowling points gave them 13 points and still took them past the 10 needed to be the first team to definitely progress to the semi-finals.

As the Cricket Association Communications’ Manager Ian Fell observed, “the results are great for North Cyprus Cricket, having really opened up the Leagues”. With the top 2 teams from each league going through to the semi-finals, even though Girne are through, they will only be in top spot if Near East beat Taşkınköy. Whilst in League A, nothing is decided and any 2 sides could still qualify as they go into the final round of games.
