Creditwest North Cyprus Cricket League
The sound of leather on willow returns to North Cyprus this Sunday the 15th March 2015 with the start of the inaugural Creditwest North Cyprus Cricket League.
Chairman Nigel Holman explained since the TRNC Cricket Association was formed last year the game has taken the North Cyprus sports scene by storm. There are now 6 teams playing regularly and the new league purely for North Cyprus teams will settle the debate which is the best.
It’s planned for two T/20 games/day, on alternative Sundays, starting this week with the final in Mid-May. When competition organiser Danish Afridi was asked why not have one game every week, he told us that by playing one Sunday on and one off it allowed for fixture rescheduling if there was bad weather or problems with pitch availability. We get the impression these cricket boys are thinking of everything.
The League has been split into 2 mini leagues with 3 teams in each, called A and B. The 2 sides finishing in 1st and 2nd place then play semi-finals against the other leagues teams, with the final on 10th May.
League A: Cyprus All Stars, Famagusta Warriors, Cyprus Lions
League B: Near East University, Girne, Taşkınköy
This Sunday’s games will be at the very pretty new venue of Karşıyaka Football Stadium. For those not sure where it is, from Girne it’s 200m along the 1st turning on the left after the village square. The first game starts at 10am and the second 1.30pm. They will be fast and furious with a strict time limit of 85 minutes per innings and penalty runs being awarded if it takes longer, so matches should last about 3 hours.
The leagues points system is intriguing. Winners receive 30 points and the other team gets 1 point/wicket taken and 1 point for every 25 runs the team scores over 50. Which should add an interesting twist to things.
Tad Haigh who arranges the Association’s pitches said the local authority only announces which grounds are available on the Monday before games, so supporters need to either look in the local press, at the TRNC Cricket Association’s website or Facebook for the latest information.
