“21st to 25th December Struggle and Martyrs Week”

Martyrs who lost their lives during Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence are being commemorated with ceremonies and activities arranged within the framework of 21st to 25th  December Struggle and Martyrs Week.

Commemorations started with the laying of theMuseum of Barbarism, Kumsal, Lefkosa wreaths which took place at Lefkoşa Martyrs Monument and was followed by a ceremony at Lefkoşa Atatürk Culture Centre .

President Derviş Eroğlu issued a message about the 21-25 December Struggle and Martyrs Week.

In his message, Eroğlu expressed “Turkish Cypriot people have passed through a very difficult time before reaching today.  We were attacked and experienced deep sadness which we do not want to be repeated again. The struggle displayed by the Turkish Cypriots at the Bloody Noel on 21-25 December 1963 against Greek Cypriot attacks from all quarters of Cyprus is one of the most honourable and heroic struggles of the history. Everyone should know and should not dispute the fact that the Cyprus Republic which was established jointly with Turkish and Greek Cypriots in 1960 did not satisfy the Greek – Greek Cypriot duo and for this reason, the Akritas plan was put into force on 21 December 1963 to destroy all of the Turkish Cypriots and take the whole island under Greek hegemony in a short while”.
