Erdoğan: “We cannot stay out of developments”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said “Recent developments in South Cyprus are not the kind of developments from which we can stay out . Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa is currently in the area and will continue its existence there as long as the Greek Cypriot administration and Greece continue to ignore our warnings”.
President Erdoğan attended the International Petrol and Natural Gas Strategies Symposium Gala and 60th year reception of Turkish Petroleum Corporation. In his speech, Erdoğan said that petrol and natural gas caused sorrow and destruction rather than being a source of wealth, and he added that their approach has been totally different. He said in Turkey the principle is using these resources for the benefit of the whole community, its prosperity and happiness. Erdoğan also said “I believe that we have proved this with the projects we accomplished. Especially, in the last 12 years, we have spent great effort to channel the reserves to economy and to find new reserves”.
Furthermore, adding that Turkish Cypriots have equal rights in energy activities taking place in the region, Erdoğan said “Turkey does not explore natural gas only in its own territory but also all over the world including Azerbaijan, Iraq, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Colombia. Turkish Cypriots’ rights are based on law. I want to emphasize that we will always be the advocate of justice”.
Underlining Turkey’s support for the Turkish Cypriots on the energy issue, Erdoğan said “For some time we have been making search activities with our own vessels and, after some time, we will be able to make drilling activities on our own platform. I want to remind the Greek Cypriot side once again that both sides have rights in the energy resources of the island. We keep saying since the beginning that this problem should be solved within the framework of international law.”
Eroğlu: “I am not going to say yes to everything the Greek Cypriot leadership asks, only to make some people happy”
President Derviş Eroğlu said the Turkish Cypriot side wants to reach a solution that would be permanent, viable and based on the island’s realities and that he is not going to say “yes” to everything the Greek leadership demands so that some people would be happy.
President Eroğlu indicated that the excessive demands of Greeks at the table are an indication that they are not willing to reach a solution.
Eroğlu once again emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side is at the table and indicated that it is the Greek Cypriot leader who left the negotiation table .President Eroğlu reminded the fact that before the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa vessel that is making research on behalf of Turkish Cypriots, it was the Piri Reis vessel doing research while the negotiations were going on.
President Eroğlu also indicated that the Greek Cypriots have excessive demands on property and are demanding most of the coastline that are in the TRNC borders now.
Eroğlu stated that the existence of the TRNC is the most important element which strengthens his position at the table and said “when I say this, they say you do not want reconciliation and agreement. Despite the things Greek Cypriots do, they don’t call Greek Cypriots irreconcilable but they say I’m irreconcilable”.
