You Couldn’t Make It Up

But you could with CESV!

By Claire Lamb

Actually if you had joined in with the latest course held by members of the Civil Emergency Service Volunteers (CESV) you probably could make it up!

The new training year got off to a great start for the CESV with a makeup course headed by Terry Carter.  It was a refresher for some and a new experience for others, opening up a world of make believe.  As many of our followers will know we like to make our training sessions as authentic as possible.  With the aid of the stage makeup we can provide CESV Training with simulated injuries 1you with a variety of injuries ranging from a basic bruise or blister to a lost limb!  As new recruit Gail Quelch said “I have seen such things on TV but never expected to be doing this for real.”  Using basic ingredients from the kitchen and some cleverly applied makeup our members can “make up” some very realistic wounds which are definitely not for the faint hearted.

The CESV also held one day 1st aid training courses at the English School of Kyrenia (ESK).  These courses were held for teachers at the school who were impressed by the after school training provided by our members for the children.  Over a period of two days more than 20 of the teachers, many who are parents themselves, were taught the basics of 1st aid and what to do in an emergency situation.  Skills which can be put to good use at work or at home.

As winter is slowly heading our way it also means it is time for the CESV to gather for their twice monthly meetings at the church hall at St Andrews, Girne.  These meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month and cover a different topic of 1st aid each week.  As well as CESV Training with simulated injuries 5covering the more usual topics of the recovery position, how to treat burns and breaks we also have some very hands on sessions using items that are found in the home or car for those times when a 1st aid kit isn’t to hand. The subjects covered are varied and tailored to what the members require.  As we now have up to date training equipment bought with funds raised, the lessons this term are going to be a new experience for all of us!  If you already have a 1st aid qualification or would like to learn new skills then come along and meet us on the 1st or 3rd Monday of each month at 7.15pm, St. Andrews Church Hall, Girne.

Also, back by popular demand are the 1st aid training sessions to be held in the Esentepe area!  We will be holding a once a month 1st aid training session at Sinya Restaurant on the main coast road.  If people in this area are interested can they please email cesv.adm@gmail.com telling us which would be the preferred day and would daytime or evening be better?  Once we have an idea of numbers and preferred times we will issue details in the press, on our Facebook page – TRNC Civil Emergency Service Volunteers and also on our webpage at www.cesvtrnc.com.  These 1st aid sessions will cover everything from the 1 day 1st aid course and those who are interested may take the exam at the end to receive their certificate.

We look forward to meeting you soon at one of our events.  You too can help us to help you!
