Lord Maginnis of Drumglass criticises British Government’s handling of Cyprus problem
Lord Maginnis of Drumglass gave a damning criticism of the British Government for its failure to recognise the reality of the Cyprus problem in a speech to the House of Lords on Tuesday (15th July 2014).
During the debate on Cyprus, Lord Maginnis, former MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone in Northern Ireland, also accused the British Government of its inability to contribute to a viable solution.
“I will be critical of the role that for more than 50 years the United Kingdom has played in terms of assisting in a solution,” he said, “It is important to know what really happened in Cyprus. It is time to stop rewriting history.”
He brought up the British Government’s ignorance regarding EOKA-B’s plans to kill the Turkish Cypriot Minority in the Akritas and Ifestos plans, which he called “the blueprint for ethnic cleansing.”
Lord Maginnis also criticised the long held assumption that the Cyprus Problem began with the Turkish invasion in 1974, rather than with the coup lead by the Greek terrorist group EOKA-B and the Greek Junta. Their goal being ENOSİS, the annexation of Cyprus to Greece.
“Let me outline when the invasion of Cyprus began, he said, “It was not 20 July when the Turkish military, in order to protect Turkish Cypriots, intervened in the island.”
Unlike many foreign politicians, Lord McGinnis applauded the decision by Turkey to intervene in Cyprus, a responsibility that Britain, one of the Island’s guarantors failed to uphold. “Turkey, as a guarantor power did what we, as a guarantor power, should have done,” he said, “intervened to try to stop wholesale slaughter.”
His speech also included the little talked about “Greek-on-Greek bloodletting”, between supporters of Makarios and the communist party AKEL that took place between 15 July and 20 July 1974, in which over 3,000 were killed.
Lord McGinnis accused the British Government of failing its own people through its inability to protect the Turkish Cypriots and questioned its ability to aid in the peace process.
“How can we, with so little self-respect, ever hope to play a positive role in bringing some sort of settlement?” he concluded.

priot negotiator Andreas Mavroyannis met yesterday (16th July 2014) in the framework of Cyprus negotiations.
Özersay stated that Turkish Cypriot side submitted two proposals concerning the issues of ‘the transitional period arrangements’ and ‘security and guarantees’ and added that the Greek Cypriot side submitted a proposal on ‘citizenship’.
Özersay pointed out that he had a close meeting with Mavroyannis and they discussed the issues which are difficult to solve.
The Brirish could not digest being chucked out of Cyprus Government. After they gave independence to Cypriots, they started prepairing grounds for them to fight. I have witnessed civilian British soldiers selling guns, hand grenades and ammunition to both Turkish and Greek Cypriots for pea nut money. Typical British system. “Divide and rule”. So it is not surprising that the British soldiers did not move a finger while the Cypriots were killing each other. After the 1974 intervention of Turkey Britain supported the Greeks.They were critisising Turkey. The British knows the Cyprus problem better than any other country, because they witnessed most of it. When Eoka were killing the British soldiers (with the orders of Makarios) it was the Turkish Cypriot commandos in the front line protecting the British
soldiers..Britain was one of the first country to recognise the Greek Cypriot government after 1974 and and condemn the Turkish Cypriots with the embargoes.
Thank you for your comment. If only a solution could be reached and the island become Cyprus again but until everyone learns to accept the truth, live together and move on it seems to be a stalemate situation. As the bible says, Love Thy Neighbour as Thyself, Simple really!!
