Kyrenia Liman Rotaract Park

By Chris Elliott

Last Thursday the 19th June I went along to the official opening of the Kyrenia Liman Rotaract Park in Kyrenia near the Teachers Hotel and it was a bit of a return journey for me.

Way back in  March 2013 I watched Can Gazi’s “A Cup of Conversation” show on BRT2 when he interviewed Teoman Adacan the Founding President Roraract Parkof Kyrenia St Hilarion Rotaract Club.

What fascinated me about this interview was that Can spoke of the time when he was part of  Kyrenia Liman Rotaract Club and their big project then was the construction of the park in 2000 and some weeks after the show  I went along to visit the park but of course with the passage of time it was looking far from its best.

For me therefore it was a great pleasure to see the re-opening of the park that had been refurbished  as a joint project between the Rotary Club of Kyrenia Liman, and the Rotaract Club of Kyrenia Liman under the guidance of Club President Rahmi Ozsan following consultation with the  local residents to determine what would make the park an asset to the local community .

This was the final project of a very successful year for Kyrenia Liman Rotary Club under the guidance of Celebrating the project completionClub President Rahmi Ozsan  when a record number of new members joined during Rahmi’s term of office, and the club continues to go from strength to strength.

So it was on a hot day in June when the media gathered to witness the reopening of the Park with Mayor of Girne, Sumer Aygin coming to the event to add his best wishes and thanks to both Rotary Club of Kyrenia Liman, and the Rotaract Club of Kyrenia Liman for their splendid work and support in bringing this community asset back to its former glory which the community can now enjoy.

It is so good to hear of such events and when we look around we can see so many signs of investment to improve our community whether it be as a direct result of the Improvements made by the Kyrenia Municipality or organisations such as Rotary and Rotaract. I gather in speaking to Rotarian Gültaç Özsan, that Girne Mayor, Sumer Aygin is now hopeful of  improving the track leading up to the Green Hill, British Cemetery off the Girne by-pass which will make the journey of mourners and visitors a little less stressful.

For those readers who would like to learn more of Rotary Club of Kyrenia Liman, they can be found on Facebook click here and on their very informative new webpage which can be read by clicking here and a few more feature pages will be added to this very soon.
