Pancake Day at The Courtyard, Karakum

By Margaret Sheard

We are fast approaching Shrove Tuesday – 4th March, affectionately known as Pancake Day. The word shrove is the past tense of the Pancake tossingEnglish verb shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the custom for Christians to be “shriven” before the start of Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday. There are many different types of Shrove Tuesday events throughout the world and different countries, cultures and religions celebrate in their own way but in the UK it is Pancake Day and is a wonderful tradition.

The Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch, has organised its second Pancake Day event at The Courtyard in Karakum starting at 11am. 5TL for members and 8TL for non-members, including coffee/tea and pancakes. There will be a lot of fun and laughter withRBL the pancake race and people are urged to bring along their pans and join in the race.

After the excitement of the races you can relax, enjoy a two-course lunch and then be entertained by former Warrant Officer Bill Hayley BEM RN as he relates stories from his time serving on the Royal Yacht Britannia in the 60s & 70s.

Reservation is essential – 30TL for members and 35TL for non-members.

Reservations for both events should be made by calling 0533 859 2451 or visiting the RBL stall at Lambousa Saturday market.
