UN Route March the Green Line for Charity

In preparing to publish Can Gazi’s BRT2 “A Cup of Conversation” show article for this week, we were fascinated to note that UN Padre Andrew Oliver was one of Can’s guests.
Following the Remembrance Day Service in Kyrenia in November, Margaret and I took 3 British ex-service men plus fellow writer Ismail Veli the following day to meet the UN at Ledra Place where we were then taken to Wayne’s Keep Cemetery to be greeted by Padre Andrew
Oliver who along with Sergeant Mark White led us to a number of graves our guests wanted to visit and then Andrew conducted a very touching service for us.
From the information we have been able to gain it would seem that Andrew, who has 2 months mandrewore to serve in Cyprus, wanted to do something for charities on both sides of the border before he leaves and with a number of caring folk helping out, a fund raising event has been arranged.
Andrew, together with around 10 soldiers, will walk the buffer zone from west to east covering around 180 KM! Their walk will take them around 4/5 days and they will camp out overnight and not return to base. Naturally being in the demilitarised zone there will be hazards to be avoided including perhaps the last of the land mines.
Donations collected as a result of this walk will be divided equally between the SOS Children’s Village in Lefkosa and another charity in Cyprus.
