No Flu Pandemic in Northern Cyprus

The Ministry of Health has issued a statement regarding news of a deadly virus that has appeared on headlines of local newspapers.

The director of the Ministry of Health – Basic Health Services Department, Emine Güllüelli made statements regarding flu cases in the TRNC and the precautionary measures that should be taken.

‘This year more than half the cases of flu around the world is Influenza A virus or H3N2. There is no need for panic as there is no pandemic’ said Güllüelli and added that samples have been taken from the two patients that are currently in the intensive care unit at the hospital and these samples have been sent to Turkey.

She also informed the public that if they don’t want to catch the flu then they should rest well, eat a balanced and healthy diet and give great importance to hygiene.

The Health Minister Ahmet Gülle also made a statement regarding the two people who lost their lives at the state hospital due to H3N2.

He is quoted as saying that one of the two patients had come from overseas and had died due to a lung infection and the second patient had come to the hospital with the same complaints and had died within the same day.

‘An investigation is underway’ said Gülle.
Influenza A virus subtype H3N2 is a subtype of viruse that causes influenza or flu. H3N2 is increasingly abundant in seasonal influenza, which kills an estimated 36,000 people in the United States each year.
