EROĞLU:“GREEK CYPRIOT SIDE DOES NOT NEED AN AGREEMENT”

President Derviş Eroğlu has said that the Greek Cypriot side was using its recognition and EU membership Dervis Eroglu 8unilaterally and unjustly.

Recording that the Greek Cypriot side does not need an agreement Eroğlu said: “The only reason that the Greeks are pretending to be involved in negotiations is to show themselves to the world as being the side which does not avoid the negotiations and also to condemn the Turkish Cypriot side to the status quo”

On 21st of December the 6th People’s Council meeting was organized by the TRNC Presidency and nearly 60 representatives from different associations, institutions, unions and non-governmental organizations participated in the meeting. His undersecretary Hasan Güngör and Special Representative and Spokesman Osman Ertuğ accompanied the President in the meeting.

“WE CONTINUE OUR EFFORTS FOR FINDING A SOLUTION THROUGH NEGOTIATIONS”

Emphasizing that the Cyprus problem is now 50 years old, President Dr. Derviş Eroğlu reminded that many UN plans have been prepared up to  today, but the Greek Cypriot side always refused all of these plans. Eroğlu said “we continue our efforts for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem through negotiations”.

Eroğlu stated that they negotiate bi-zonal, bi-communal federation based on political equality on the negotiation table, and added:

“The partnership state to be established will be a state which wThe Negotiations Cannot Resume imageill not force us to live those ways  that we have lived for 50 years”.

Underlining the major targets of Turkish Cypriot side in the negotiations, President Eroğlu emphasized that he wants to create a partnership where Turkish Cypriots will live freely with safety and confidence under their own controlled state, not under the control of a Greek Cypriot administration.

Eroğlu pointed out that a possible agreement will be based on the assurance of Turkey’s rights and benefits arising from London and Zurich Agreements and Guarantee and Alliance Agreements, and added:

“If we can establish this partnership state our target, of course, will not be division but, unfortunately, the Greek Cypriot side tries to accuse us of this. We know by heart what we negotiate on the negotiation table. The Greek Cypriot side, which takes advantage of recognition and EU membership unjustly and unilaterally, does not need any agreement.

The only reason for them to sit at the negotiation table is to show to the world that they are not the side which escapes from the negotiation table, and at the same time to condemn us, as the Turkish Cypriot side, to the status-quo.

In order not to be accused as the side escaping from the negotiation table, Greek Cypriot side gives the impression that the negotiations continue by preferring policy of reluctance. This is one of the important obstacles in front of the Turkish Cypriot side.

When we demand the embargoes imposed upon us to be lifted we are told, by those we meet in order to get our rights, that the negotiations should continue and all of these embargoes will be lifted with an agreement.

Eroğlu stated that today, many independent UN member states are faced with more important problems than experienced in the TRNC and added “to rely everything upon a solution is wrong and this strengthens Greek Cypriot side’s hand without coming to the negotiation table”.
