The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and the Cyprus Turkish Football Federation (CTFF) have agreed on a temporary settlement which will make Turkish Cypriot teams a part of CFA. The agreement, which was signed in FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland with the participation of both FIFA and UEFA will now have to be approved by the teams participating in the two federations in Cyprus.

It is also reported that the agreement recognises CFA as the authority for local and international football on the island. The text of the agreement also points out that the arrangement will be on a temporary basis, until the solution of the Cyprus problem. Firstly the CTFF federation will become a member of CFA, which will in return recognise the CTFF federation’s authority on North Cypriot football. The two authorities will form an organising committee which will examine future steps such as CTFF participation in CFA leagues, referee training and arranging international friendly matches for North Cypriot teams.

Before the meeting, “Gazete360.com” was reporting that the meeting was likely to result in an agreement aimed at the development of Turkish Cypriot football, opening it up to the rest of the world. “Politis” also reported that while there has been extensive coverage and discussion of the issue in Turkish Cypriot society, with about 81% of people giving their support in polls and the teams themselves approaching the possibility in a positive light, Greek Cypriot media has not given the subject much coverage. In fact, the report adds, it is unclear whether the teams themselves would approve of the deal, even though, as the article points out, there is no reason for them to reject the expected terms.

The Turkish Cypriot delegation was represented by Hasan Sertoğlu, the head of the Cyprus Turkish Football Federation, while the Greek Cypriot delegation was headed by Kostakis Koutsokoumnis, the head of the Cyprus Football Association. FIFA President Sepp Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini were present at the meeting.
