On this occasion the Guest Speaker will be former Ministry of Defence Police Officer Laurence Brown MBE.   PC Brown, known as ‘Jarra’, made it possible for fallen Service Personnel to be taken from RAF Lyneham through Royal Wootton Bassett to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He pulled agencies together to organise the 46-mile route and the stop off in the town. PC Brown, who has been made an MBE for his work, travelled in a police escort alongside the corteges, ensuring the journeys passed smoothly.

Steve Love, Chief Constable of the MoD Police, said: “PC Brown’s recognition in the New Year’s Honours List is richly deserved. He remains entirely focused on enhancing the quality of life of the people in his community and represents many of the fine qualities we expect of our police officers. He is a credit to the force.”

The repatriations, which became a national symbol of the soldiers’ sacrifice, began in April 2007. Thanks to PC Brown’s efforts, the community turned out 168 times to show their support to the families and friends of 345 deceased personnel.

On being made MBE PC Brown commented.“These men and women from all three services have given the ultimate sacrifice and if we can’t escort them and give them a safe passage then something is wrong. It caught the attention and imagination of the whole country and further afield, but anyone showing respect is a good thing. The families of these men and women take great comfort from the people of Royal Wootton Bassett who pay their respects. It is the most humbling policing job.”

Using slides, music and video clips, Jarra will speak of his experiences including working with British Legion Branches, other Veterans Organisations, Service Units and other agencies.

This ‘Talk’ promises to be a most interesting occasion which should prove to be very popular, therefore early reservations are recommended; the cost is to be 30TL for RBL members or 35TL for non-members.  Reservations can be made by calling  0533 859 2451 or by e-mail at events@rblkyrenia.com
