Can Gazi: the man behind the mike.

We are delighted to welcome Can Gazi, the well known Bayrak Radio and TV personality, as a new member of our volunteer writers’ group and he will be placing articles on these pages with information about the BRT programmes, events and people plus features about those subjects so dear to his heart.

Can Gazi was born in London in 1971. His parents had moved from Cyprus to the UK in 1963. After graduating from Greenwich University with a degree in Applied Biology, Can and family decided to return to their homeland and in 1994 settled back on the island for good.

A family friend introduced Can to the Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation. The English language radio channel Bayrak International welcomed enthusiastic broadcasters with a good command of English. After a few weeks of training and later completing his obligatory one month military service Can officially began his radio career in February 1995.

Can began to work on various music, news and entertainment shows, and often partnered fellow DJs. He was later brought into the office full time when in 1997 Bayrak decided to open a second television channel which was to broadcast, amongst other things, local news and a few locally produced programmes in English. The name was originally BRT 2 TV, later to become affectionately known as BRT FAMILY. Jumping from behind the radio microphone into the lights of the TV cameras, Can began to produce short documentaries and also helped organise the transmission schedule.

In 2001 Can began to present a show about the people and locations of North L-R Can Gazi, Chris Elliott, Margaret SheardCyprus. The show was called “Places & Faces” and often saw Can out and about with microphone in hand interviewing many people. The show always ended with the catchphrase “Next time it could be your face at a special place.” The format of the programme later changed into a studio based weekly chat show at the Bayrak centre in Lefkoşa and was renamed “A Cup Of Conversation.” The programme continues to broadcast to this day.

Aside from his TV show today, Can still presents various radio programmes on Bayrak International. He is most fond of his “Northern Exposure” show which BRT logohe has been co-hosting every evening of the working week since September 1996 with fellow DJ Fatoş Baykal. The programme is all about North Cyprus, its history, geography and culture. But most of all it’s about promoting local events (art, culture, social & charity) and informs listeners as to what’s happening on the island.

Can is proud to be a part of the Bayrak family and has been happily flying the flag for 18 years. Living in Girne, he is married to Duygu Gazi and has a son Karan, who was born in 2009.

Welcome again Can and we all look forward to hearing your news in the future.
