Kyrenia Amateur Dramatic Society

The Kyrenia Amateur Dramatic Society (KADS) have been busy again and on the 6th/7th & 8th December they presented 2 plays at the Kyrenia Municipality Cultural Centre, which were a huge success for these dedicated thespians who work hard to give the people of North Cyprus something different and entertaining.

When arriving at the theatre on 7th December, I spoke with Beverley Westbrook (Front of House) and she told me there would probably be 70-80 in the audience that evening and I believe the other 2 nights also did really well with attendance.    I bumped into Barbara Booth who said she had been brought in to take a part in the first play and she literally only had 2 weeks to learn the part and the lines but she gave a brilliant performance, as Costa Del Packet 1did everyone else, so well done Barbara.

The first play was “Costa Del Packet” by Anthony Booth.  The theme was a group of 4 ladies on a trip to Majorca who arrive to find the hotel had not yet been built, there were no flights home and no other accommodation available so the only place they could stay in was the builders’ hut on the site of the non-existent hotel.  There was very amusing dialogue passing between the ladies (Caroline Attwood,Costa Del Packet 2 Deborah Bahadır, Barbara Booth and Claudia Hanna) and the “Rep” played by Wyn Harrison.  The ending of the play was a letter given to one of the ladies which turned out to be the winning result of a competition she had entered for a free holiday – and where was this holiday you may ask – well, it was the same non-existent hotel where they were booked into for this holiday.

This was a very amusing play and the audience really enjoyed it going by the applause it received.  Well done to Lawrie Oxley and the cast.

After the interval we all settled down to watch the second play.  This was “World Premiere” by Charles Mander.   The theme for World Premiere 1this play was an amateur dramatic company entering a drama festival and gathering in a village hall for a rehearsal of a play written by their producer.  Again this was a very amusing play and I noticed Şirin Damdelen in the cast who played Val, a character who fainted at the slightest problem.   There was also BWorld Premiere 2everley Westbrook, who normally does a lot of behind scenes work, who played Ruth Truelove the slightly inebriated wife of Gordon (played by Phil Lucock).   The cast also had Don & Caroline Attwood, Stephen Everett and Wyn Harrison performing to their usual high standard.  Again well done Lawrie Oxley and the cast.

The event was in aid of charity and proceeds will be going to Kyrenia Animal Rescue (KAR) and the SOS Children’s Village.

Thanks have been extended to Serdar Tuksal and his team at the Kűltűr Merkezi for all their help in putting on the production.   Lawrie Oxley also sent a message to the audience, via the programme, wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2013 and he hopes to see everyone again in the Spring for the next KADS production.

KADS is always looking for new members both onstage and backstage so if you are interested in being a part of the group please contact Lawrie Oxley by email at lawrieoxley@hotmail.com or by telephone on 0533 848 9839 or contact Beverley Westbrook on 0533 832 8121.    For more information about KADS and their history click these links
