Events Calendar – Issue 4

2nd October 2012

From  10th September to 17th October Bellapais International North Cyprus Music Festival.  All concerts start at 8.30pm.  Tickets 30TL from Deniz Plaza, The Dome Hotel. Bellapais Gardens Hotel, Kybele Restaurant and the Abbey Box Office.

2nd – 7th October Tuesday to Saturday  11th Zeytinlik Olive Festival.  Always a good event to attend.  There will be music and dancing and throughout the festival olive/olive oil products, souvenirs, handcrafts, wood carvings and traditional food and drinks will be available at the many stalls.
4th to 7th October Thursday to Sunday A retreat weekend at Bűyűkkonuk has been organised by Tarik Tekman for the practice of Qigong, Tai Chi and Meditation. For further details contact Tarik on 0533 8418000 or email tariktekman@gmail.com
5th October – Friday The Kyrenia Chamber Choir, under the Direction of George Ward, will perform a Concert at Bellapais Abbey at 20.30 hrs.  The Concert will comprise of three themes, namely “Fugue”, “Water” and a tribute to the “Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Queen”. Furthermore, the concert will mark the World Premier of Richard Lambert’s Bassoon Sonata, to be played by Bassoonist, Miriam Butler.  The Composer of  the work will fly out to accompany Miriam on the piano. Tickets are 30TL and are on sale at Deniz Plazas, and the ticket box at the Abbey. The proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the SOS Kindergarten, specifically aimed towards their educational equipment needs.
6th October – Saturday Yaz Bitti Music Festival in association with the Black Olive Café and Alsancak Belediye in aid of Alsancak’s under-privileged children and sponsored by Bestseller Bookstores.  There will be live music acts from 3pm till late, festival stalls, food will be available and the bar will be open.  Tickets can be purchased from Bestseller Bookstore in Alsancak at 10TL per person (adults). Under 16’s free.
9th October – Tuesday

NCCCT Coffee Morning at the Mountain View Hotel 10.30am to mid-day. 
10th October – Wednesday Friends of the TRNC Emergency Services – Afternoon Tea Talk at The Mountain View Hotel at 3pm. The speaker will be Ruth Partridge talking about the historic Arundel Castle.

Due to illness, Ruth will be unable to attend this event and Edward Barrett will be giving a talk about “Mayors I Have Known” which will also be fascinating.

11th October – Thursday ATA are pleased to welcome back Anton Bantock who will be presenting a talk about a journey up the Nile, at The Mountain View Hotel at 12 noon for 12:30 pm. There will be a lunch of Soup, a plate of 2 mezes and hellim in pitta, and coffee or tea.   The talk will follow at approx.  13:30-14:30 pm and after the talk coffee or tea with cake will be served.Cost to Members 20TL and  Non-members 25TL Bookings by email  to  ata.events@yahoo.com  or Telephone  Yasmin  0533 848 5769
12th October – Friday Friends of the TRNC Emergency Services – Auntie Plantie presents a 60’s gig at the Mountain View Hotel. 7.30pm -late.  Invitations at 50TL per person which includes supper and all local drinks from 8pm – 11pm.  Book at Lambousa Market or telephone Brenda on 0533 840 1834 or Jenny on 0533 876 1483
14th October – Sunday Lapta Municipality is holding its first cycle tour Sunday commencing at 08.00 and meeting at Akcan Cycle Shop in Alsancak. Bicycles will be available for rent at 15TL from the cycle shop and entry for the cycle tour is free.  The minimum age for taking part is 10 years old.For rental of a bicycle and/or to have a meal after the event, please book before 12th October. After the cycle tour there will be a meal at the Sempati Hotel and this will be Chicken Kebab, Rice, Salad and chips and also a soft drink at 15TL per person. 25th October – Thursday RBL – Talk at The Courtyard, Karakum commencing 11.30am for 12 noon start.   Available to members and their guests, 5TL for Members and 10TL Non-members – Lunch is not included, however the Courtyard’s full lunch or snack bar menu will be available (Members eligible for 10% discount on production of valid membership card).Christina Smith, Vice Consul with the British High Commission (BHC), Cyprus will be talking about Consular Assistance. This is your opportunity to come and hear how the Consular Section of the BHC can help you. 5th November – Monday RBL – Supper and Talk –‘Shadows of Empire’ by the cultural historian Dorothy Betts at 7.30pm at the Deniz Kizi hotel in Alsancak. Mrs Betts wrote the booklet ‘Shadows of Empire’ to coincide with the unveiling in 2009 of the memorial to 371 servicemen killed in the Cyprus Emergency campaign of the 1950’s.  It is the story of the old British cemetery in Kyrenia along with some of its incumbents including Victoria Cross winner Sergeant Samuel McGaw.  Cost of tickets to be confirmed.
6th  November –  Tuesday News received from RBL on 26 September advising that the date of the Poppy Ball has now been changed to Tuesday 6 November.  All other details remain the same.  RBL Kyrenia Branch will be holding their Poppy Ball at the Cratos Premium Hotel in Catalkoy, starting at 7.30pm. This is open to members and guests. Tickets are 130TL for members and 150TL for non-members.  A deposit of 30TL will be required when booking which can be done at Lambousa Saturday Market. There will be a coach from Karsiyaka on a first come first served basis. Discounted accommodation is offered by the Cratos and reservations should be made by contacting Jacqui Smith at the Cratos on 0533 8203105  Entertainment is being planned including an eight piece jazz combo band and also the sensational Simon Barter, along with a few surprises on the night.
10th November – Saturday Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch – Poppy Walk 11am starting and finishing at JK’s Bar.  This is a fun and sociable event designed for all ages and capabilities including wheelchair entries and will take the form of a flat and easy circular 5Km route, which includes part of the new coastal path thanks to the Lapta Belediyesi, followed by a second 5km circular around Lapta village. Fancy dress is optional but actively encouraged and JK’s are planning to have a bouncy castle plus live entertainment on the day.  Branch member Lord Maginnis of Drumglass has kindly agreed to launch the walk on the day.The cost to participate is 10tl (or 20tl on the day) and registration forms and sponsorship forms are available from the RBL stall at the Lambousa market, the Courtyard Inn in Karakum or online at: http://www.rblkyrenia.com/events/event_poppywalk.html  Everyone is welcome to participate.
11th November – Sunday Remembrance Sunday service at the Old British Cemetery at 12.25pm The Rev. Richard Frost will be officiating, he has now been officially nominated as the Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch, Chaplain. The service will be followed by lunch at the Ship Inn, Karaoğlanoğlu at 30TL Bookings required through the Entertainment Secretary by emailing event@rblkyrenia.com or telephone 0533 8736876
16th November – Friday Children in Need Foundation (CINF) Winter Ball at the Cratos Premium Hotel, Çatalkőy.  The Manhattans will be performing their fabulous tribute act.  Further details to be published later.
18th November – Sunday Friends of the TRNC Emergency Services are organizing a Treasure Hunt around Girne, starting with a meal at Café George in the Plaza area.  This should be a good fun day. More details to follow later.
19th November – Monday CESV will be at Sinya Restaurant in Tatlisu where they will be starting first aid evenings from 7pm to 9pm.  All adults are welcome so why not go along and learn some life saving skills in a friendly informal group. If anyone is interested in joining the CESV team contact Steve Collard on 0548 845 5927 or go along to Tatlisu on the 19th November for a chat.
26th November – Monday Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch Annual General Meeting – venue and time to be advised later
