HUNDREDS OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS GATHER OUTSIDE OF BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION TO DEMAND A FAIR APPEAL PROCESS FOR TURKISH CYPRIOT BUSINESSMAN, ASIL NADIR

Hundreds of Turkish Cypriots who believe in the innocence of Turkish Cypriot businessman, former Chairman of Polly Peck Company, Asil Nadir, rallied outside of the British High Commission in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The action came from more than a dozen civil organizations, followed a week long statement by organizations, unions, chambers and more that believe Nadir’s sentence was unjust. The crowd arrived in front of the British High Commission, while traditional drum and clarion being played after stopping by a crossing point between TRNC and Greek Cypriot Side to give a letter to a UN soldier addressed to the UN Secretary General.

Similar letter addressed to the British High Commissioner Matthew Kidd, which appeals to the British government to ensure Asil Nadir, who was sentenced for 10 years, gets a fair appeal.

The letter also asserts that Asil Nadir’s fall was due to Greek Cypriot conspiracy and cites statements by Greek Cypriot Leaders Representative George Iacovou that admits an office was formed by Greek Cypriot administration to track Asil Nadir’s ascent since 1982. The letter also calls that documents presented to the court that also include confessions by Iacovou should be read to get a clear understanding of the whole plot.
