The start of the building of the railway commenced in Famagusta with the construction in the harbour of a jetty to receive material and following the building of the Famagusta station, the construction proceeded westward towards Nicosia with more stations and other buildings and track  being built. Akincilar – Lurucina Reunions 2014 – Margaret Sheard and I had the privilege of visiting the Akincilar annual village festival last year as the guests of Raziye Kocaismail who is from this village as well as being the Founder and President of Help Those With Cancer Association (Tulips) .

Following this visit we were left with many feelings about the village. Sadness at its decline and also fascination for the rich heritage of what was once the largest Turkish Cypriot village in Cyprus before its decline since the 1950s. Seeing so many people interested in its roots through Facebook groups and the work of Ismail Veli with his website Families of Lurucina click here and on cyprusscene.com one can only be delighted that so many people are now taking an interest and wanting to locate and record the history of the past for the generations of the future. Cyprus : The story of Maria and Nicos of Trachoni near Kythrea – The story of Maria and Nicos (aka Nico) is one of a typical Cypriot couple and yet I found something special about Maria’s story of the love of her life, Nico, who sadly passed away in 2009. Maria is currently suffering from Alzheimers and losing Nico has affected her tremendously, and so her memory and health are not what they used to be. Listening to her story, the outpouring of grief, emotion and love had a profound effect on me. To read more click here.

British Army memories in Cyprus 1958-1959 – I  have previously been doing research about Newman’s Farm in Kyrenia which is now the site of The Chinese House Restaurant on the Karaoğlanoğlu road.  The article I wrote at the time prompted some response from British ex-servicemen and although it did not fill in the gaps for me I started to think what interesting stories these people must have to tell about their time here

One such person was Derek Chilvers, who came back to Cyprus in 2012 for the first time in 53 years since his army days when he served here as a Rifleman with the Suffolk Regiment in 1958/59. To read more click here
