GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME WAS READ OUT IN THE PARLIAMENT

The programme of the interim government, which described itself as a provisional government aimed at serving the public on the basis of transparency and accountability, was read out in the parliament on Monday  17th June.

The programme of the Republican Turkish Party-United Forces, Democrat Party-National Forces and Communal Democracy Party interim coalition government was read out at the Republic’s Assembly yesterday.

The first part of the programme was read out by Prime Minister, Sibel Siber, while the second part was read by the Minister of Finance, Zeren Mungan.

Reading the first part of the programme, Prime Minister Sibel Siber said that it will be the government’s duty to uphold the rule of law and to implement existing legislation according to the laws.

The parliament will convene on Thursday and hold a debate on the programme of the new government.

A full day after the end of discussions on the programme, the Republic’s Assembly will convene to hold a vote of confidence for the new government.

CIRALI: “NEGOTIATIONS ARE BEING REALIZED TO INCLUDE TURKISH CYPRIOTS IN HALOUMI REGISTRATION”

Stating that he mentioned in 2012 to the Cyprus Turkish Department of the EU Commission and Embassies of the EU member countries that halloumi was not only the product of Greek Cypriots but also it belongs to Turkish Cypriots, the President of Board of Directors of the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry (CTCI) Ali Cırali said that negotiations are being conducted in order to include also Turkish Cypriots in the registration which will be held in the EU.

Expressing that 17% of the exports in 2012 in the North Cyprus was halloumi, Çıralı said that studies are being conducted within the chamber regarding halloumi which is one of the most important cultural and economic values of the Turkish Cypriots and drew attention to the ‘Halloumi Promotion Group’ which is formed by halloumi producers, related shareholders and experts.

HASIKOS: “TARGET IS TO PREVENT APPLICATIONS TO IMMOVABLE PROPERTY COMMISSION”

Greek Cypriot Internal Affairs Minister, Sokratis Hasikos, has prepared a draft law releasing the purchase and sale of Greek Cypriot properties in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) between Greek Cypriots in order to prevent the applications to be made by Greek Cypriots to the Immovable Property Commission established in the TRNC. According to the draft law, purchasing and selling of the properties in this category will be excluded from any property transfer tax or any other taxes.

JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE BY ISRAEL-GREECE-SOUTH CYPRUS IN SOUTH CYPRUS-CRETE-MEIS TRIANGLE

It has been reported that South Cyprus, Greece and Israel will conduct a joint military exercise and therefore their armed forces will be deployed in South Cyprus and in the area in the following days.

Greek Cypriot daily Alithia, which gave reference to the news of ANT 1, stated that Greek National Guard and Israeli armed forces are in preparation for a large scale military exercise to be conducted in South Cyprus and added:

“Greek Cypriot, Israeli and Greek armed forces will gather in South Cyprus and in the area. The military exercise which is conducted with the participation of Greek and Israeli military aircraft which will be carried out in airspace in South Cyprus on Tuesday and Wednesday. The exercise started last Wednesday and is being carried on in South Cyprus in the international waters within the South Nicosia, Tel Aviv and Athens Flight Control Area.

A sunny Sunday dawned on 16th June and several of the CESV members set off for the Civil Defense base at Esentepe in readiness to train the forest fire recruits in first aid. On arrival we were all stunned by the fabulous location and wished that all our training sessions were so scenic!

In total 28 forest fire fighters turned up from Tatlısu to Girne. The course was due to take 5 hours but due to an elevated fire risk we had to condense our training into two and a half hours – just proves that we can adapt to any situation.

The course started with an introduction to first aid and covered some of the topics the firemen may come across. Then came the fun part! The CESV members had split into 3 groups each covering a different subject ready for the hands on section of the training. One group had a knife sticking out of one of our members ( the amazing make up skills of some of Stuart Mitchell and Alan Warboys made this so realistic that some of the men asked what had happened!) to train the men on how to treat an embedded object. The next group had a very realistic leg fracture to deal with – we kept those make up boys busy!

The final group were being taught how to put someone in the recovery position and how to administer CPR. Despite these being serious skills, which could help to save a life, much fun and laughter was had along the way!

Once the training was complete we all followed Cemil Karzaoğlü (Boss man) up into the mountains to a wonderful restaurant called Alevkayasi. Those of us from the Tatlısu/Esentepe area knew the road and restaurant well but it was a magical mystery tour for our other members!

We all relaxed over a lovely meal in tranquil surroundings discussing dates for the next 3 training sessions for the forest fire fighters in Yeni Erenköy, Lefkosa and Guzelyurt and once again new friendships were forged from what was initially a working partnership.

Editors Note: The CESV Volunteers work very closely with Civil Defense (Sivil Savunma) and the TRNC Emergency Services and play a very important role by giving first aid training as well as receiving training. A “Creative Minds” contest held under the GAU slogan “An idea can change the world” has resulted in a compelling final to agree the best projects.

The Jury members comprised of GAU Founding Rector and Chancellor of Board of Administrators Serhat Akpınar, GAU CEO and Vice-Chancellor of Board of Administrators Assist. Prof. Dr. ASIM Vehbi, GAU Head of Interior Architecture Department Assist. Prof. Dr. Senem Zeybekoğlu Sadri, GAU Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Sadık Ülker, Chair of Board of Administrators of Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry Ali Çıralı and Chair of Young Businessmen Foundation Arsen Angın.

There were 50 contestant applications, and together with the GAU Global Science department, 8 participants were chosen to finally determine the best projects from those submitted.

The winners of the contest were Süleyman Esener and Mustafa Sami Peker from Bursa Police College with an invention of “anti-bacterial anti-moss and no odour shoe base by using clinoptilolite”.

The first runners-up were İrem Deniz Derman, Büşra Çandır and Ayça Reyyan Yalçın from the High school of Social Sciences with an invention of “Food Carnival” and finally the second runner-up was Helin Okur from Şırnak Cizre High school with an invention of a “Walking Stick for Visually Impaired Citizens”.

The plaques and awards were distributed by GAU Founding Rector and Chancellor of the Board of Administrators, Serhat Akpınar, GAU CEO and Vice-Chancellor of the Board of Administrators Assist. Prof. Dr .Asım Vehbi and GAU Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Sadık Ülker.

GAU further explained that the contest had captured the interest of many from all over Turkey and Cyprus and that the aim of the contest was to ease life and enhance productivity. Moreover GAU stated that projects such as this would be invaluable for the future support of Young Inventors and it is intended that Creative Minds contests will be organised annually.

The June NCCCT bingo night at The Ravine in Alsancak was a very successful event with 33 players and an amount of 755TL raised for the charity, so a good result.

Now that summer has arrived we sat outside on the terrace on a warm evening with a little gentle breeze from the sea, it was very pleasant. At half time some of the players had a lovely supper of Fish,Chips & Peas and some of us had Scampi & Chips with Peas, delicious!

After our supper, the free raffle was drawn and there were some nice prizes to be won. Then we resumed the game finally coming to the jackpot of 1200TL which again was not won and will be carried forward to the next bingo night which will be on Monday 15th July, same time, same place.

This is a really nice evening’s entertainment with friendly people and a very relaxed atmosphere so remember to make a note in your diary for the next event. See you there.

FATHERS’ DAY MESSAGE FROM TRNC PRESIDENT DERVIŞ EROĞLU

Pointing out that contribution of fathers has been great in the Turkish Cypriots’ turning into a people owning a State from a community which was going to be extinct, President Eroğlu said: “Our fathers’ role in protecting our national and religious identity, loyalty to their country, and their determination in the sustenance of their families in security has been great in becoming a State.

Expressing that as the Turkish side they will evaluate the last chance to reach a solution in the Cyprus issue based on the realities on the island in the best way Eroğlu said: “If our Greek neighbours sincerely desire the compromise of two communities in Cyprus, they should give up their delaying tactics as soon as possible and should come to the negotiation table with a solution orientated approach in accordance with a road map which shall be determined.

Derviş Eroğlu stressed that they want Cyprus to be an island of peace, tranquillity and friendship instead of conflict.

President Eroğlu issued a ‘Fathers Day’ message and noted that fathers are continuing to provide valuable services in every aspect of the TRNC.

HATEFUL WORDS FROM PAPHOS METROPOLITAN

Paphos Metropolitan Yeorgi’s said that if the dreadful minority and Hellenic resisters of the Junta did not undermine Makarios III , Greek Cypriot people would enjoy freedom.

Greek Cypriot daily Haravgi published the speech of Yeorgios made during an activity which was organized for the 100th birthday of Makarios III.

According to the Greek Cypriot daily Haravgi, Yeorgios said that as a religious and political leader Makarios III. believed in the power of the Greek Cypriot people, their self confidence, history and the power of justice and thus they destroyed the British rule and added:

“Makarios III  performed very valuable services as a President after the independency.  If the dreadful minority and Hellenic resisters of Junta did not undermine Makarios, Greek Cypriot people would enjoy freedom today.” 

ECHR WILL NOT ACCEPT PERSONAL APPLICATIONS MADE BY RELATIVES OF GREEK CYPRIOT MISSING PERSONS

It has been stated that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has taken a decision not to accept personal applications made by the relatives of Greek Cypriot missing persons.

In the statement made by the Association of Relatives of Greek Cypriot Missing Persons, it has been stated that the decision of ECHR blocks the way for applying to ECHR and also prevents the attempts for strengthening the respect for human rights in the international area.

According to the Greek Cypriot press, it has been stated in the decision that the relatives of Greek Cypriot missing persons should apply to the “department of missing persons” established in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus regarding the fate of the Greek Cypriot missing persons.

with GAU and TŰRKSOY

We were invited to attend the 20th Anniversary of the Foundation of the International Organisation of Turkish Culture, and the 16th TŰRKSOY Opera Evening which was held at the Spectrum Congress Hall of Girne American University on Thursday 13th June. This was the second time the Opera Evening has been held in the TRNC and it is hoped that it will become an annual event for the future. This is good news as I do like classical music and opera and there are not many opportunities to see this type of performance in North Cyprus.

The artists performing were a pianist from Turkey and the rest of the performers were tenors, baritones, sopranos and mezzo sopranos who were from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, The Russian Federation and the TRNC, the pianists who accompanied the artists were from Turkey and Kazakhstan.

This year was a special one as, upon a decision of the Permanent Council of Ministers of Culture of Turkish Speaking Countries, the International Organisation of Turkish Culture (TURKSOY) declared the year 2013 to be the Year of Mukan Tölebayev to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this great composer of the Turkish World.

The event started with a welcome and introduction by Simgi Ozekler, followed by an address to the audience by Prof. Dr. Yıldırım Öner, Rector of GAU and Dűsen Kaseinov, the General Secretary of TURKSOY.

On arrival we had been greeted by Serhat Akpinar, the Chancellor of GAU, who was pleased to see us there and he told us we were going to be treated to a wonderful evening of music. We were not disappointed, all of the artists were excellent, some of the arias were ones I was familiar with and some I had not heard before but this did not spoil the enjoyment of listening to the beautiful voices of the performers. The finale was excellent with all of the artists coming onto the stage and performing O Sole Mio, which I would think everyone was familiar with and it was a wonderful ending to what had been a brilliant concert and well deserved the standing ovation it received.

There then followed a presentation by Dűsen Kaseinov to Serhat Akpinar and each of the performers were presented with a plaque and a bouquet to mark the occasion.

We left the theatre and went to the lobby area where there were tables set out with a lovely selection of canapés and cocktails were being served to the guests who were all mingling together and no doubt discussing the wonderful concert they had just seen. We saw a lot of familiar faces from the University as well as guests who had been invited so it was nice to say hello and have a few words with them.

Gradually the crowd in the lobby diminished as people made their way home after what was a very enjoyable Night at the Opera.

We have received some sad news from Carole King and Sue Tilt of Tulips about the sad loss of Evelyn (Evie) Cox who sadly lost her battle with cancer recently and they have asked us to convey their thanks for the donations which have been made in her memory.

“A truly wonderful supporter to Tulips, Evelyn Cox aka Evie, sadly passed away from cancer of the Oesophagus on 31st May 2013.

Both Evie and Gordon, of Lapta, regularly attended Friends Line Dancing events as Evie loved to dance the night away, they also attended all the local markets and could be found hunting out new authors and books as they were both avid readers of crime and mystery books.

On behalf of Help Those With Cancer Association/Tulips we would like say a special thank you to Gordon who insisted that any donations should be made to Tulips in Evie’s memory.

We also would like to thank all of the family and friends who gave so generously, not only at Evie’s funeral, but also all the friends that attended the Tuesday Quiz Night last week at Karsiyaka Park and donated all their prize money.

The total sum raised in memory of Evie was 1,501.85TL – thank you to everyone who contributed.”

You can enjoy a good night’s entertainment at the Oris Bar in Karaoğlanoğlu on Thursday 20th June when Keith Lloyd will be giving an illustrated presentation about “A History of Beer”. The presentation will start at 8pm and having attended on a previous occasion I can recommend this as being a very humorous and interesting talk.

The event is open to adults only and there will be a first pint free and food available if required. There will be a collection for the Royal British Legion during the evening.

To give you something to think about before the talk, have a look at the following 2 posters and see if you know the answers. All will be revealed at the Oris Bar on 20th June and you can learn if you were right, or maybe wrong.

Afternoon Tea Talk – June

The months are flying by and we found ourselves at another of the monthly Afternoon Tea Talks organised by the Friends of the TRNC Emergency Services at the Mountain View Hotel in Karaoğlanoğlu. There was a change to the original talk planned as unfortunately the scheduled speaker had to postpone due to family illness and luckily Edward Barrett stepped into the breach.

The turnout for the event was a little disappointing with around 30 people attending and some people being unable to attend at the last minute but it was nice to see some of the usual friendly faces of the supporters of this very worthy cause.

Mike Plant welcomed everyone and brought them up to date with forthcoming events which includes the 60′s night on the 21st June at The Mountain View Hotel, when there will be a Blues Brothers tribute band and a disco with Werner’s Steam Machine. Tickets are selling fast but there are still some available. On Monday evening the 24th June, there is the monthly quiz at The Ravine in Alsancak which is 15TL and includes a delicious supper of Fish and Chips or Shish.

The guests started tucking into the sandwiches and cakes with tea or coffee and before long Mike was introducing the speaker for the afternoon, Edward Barrett.

Edward had previously spoken about “Mayors he has known” and he made a slight correction to the advertised topic which should have been shown as “More Mayors and more Madams”.

We had a very interesting and entertaining talk accompanied by a slide show and Edward recollected some of his experiences in dealing with Mayors and Madam Mayors during his time as Clerk to the Charter Trustees of the Bath City Council in England. There were a multitude of duties which Edward had to arrange and he told the audience about some of the vast variety of events he was involved in organising. We were treated to many amusing stories too numerous to mention here so I am noting just a few of the topics Edward covered during his talk.

The first Madam Mayor he had dealings with was an elderly spinster and there was an occasion when during a visit to Provence in France she was taken ill and had to go to hospital, the rest of the group “legged” it back to England and Edward, with his limited amount of French, was left to deal with the situation. As he was in charge of Madam Mayor’s passport he discovered that she was in fact 10 years older than she claimed! It was quite a harrowing experience as he was left there with very little money and no accommodation but he managed to sort things out and eventually Madam Mayor was discharged from hospital and they made their way back to Bath.

There were occasions when Edward accompanied the Mayor or Madam Mayor in office to various countries for reciprocal functions, football matches and in some cases for the purpose of the twinning of a town or city with Bath which was always a very enjoyable experience. There was the job of looking after VIP’s and this was when some of the ceremonial trappings saw the light of day. Edward got to wear the Master of Ceremonies badge which he said was a great honour and he also showed slides of other civic items, some of which were extremely old.

Another occasion, although a sad one, was on the death of Princess Diana which was a Sunday and the Charter Trustees were due to attend a church service that day so it was necessary to produce a huge amount of black ribbon which needed to be cut for various uses, including hats for dignitaries, the mace and the robes. It was a very rainy day so everyone got soaked during the parade and as Edward had the job of dealing with all of this he got extremely wet throughout the day.

All in all Edward enjoyed the time he spent with the Mayors and Madam Mayors of Bath and can look back on some very memorable experiences.

After the talk, Mike started the raffle and then the famous “goodie bag” so there was a lot of laughter at Mike’s usual humorous comments. The total raised for the charity from this event was 250TL.

Bavarian Recipes – A Dessert Dream

Bavarian Cream

For 4-6 people:

 • ½ vanilla pod

• ¼ litre of milk

• 4 eggs -separate yolk and egg white

• 100 grams of sugar

• 4 sheets of cold soaked gelatine

• 250 grams of whipped cream

Preparation:

 Cut vanilla pod and scrape out the marrow.

Put the gelatin in some cold water and let it soak.

Bring the milk to a boil.

Stir the egg yolks with the sugar until it gives a thick and frothy cream, then add the boiling milk slowly, stirring constantly.

Put the cream in a casserole and let it thicken over low heat while stirring constantly.

The cream should not boil because it will clot.

Remove from the heat and dissolve the squeezed gelatine in it. Add the vanilla marrow.

Put the casserole with the cream in a bowl with ice cubes and allow to cool while frequently stirring. When the cream begins to stiffen, fold in the whipped cream gently.

Fill it into a mould rinsed out with cold water and scattered with sugar.

Let it rest for at least six hours in the refrigerator, then pounce.

We have seen Devon (aka Mr Rodeo) perform on a couple of previous occasions and knew we were going to have a good night’s entertainment when he made a return appearance at Al Shaheen Restaurant in Karakum recently. We had invited some friends to join us and they thoroughly enjoyed the evening, saying they were so pleased we had asked them.

Devon takes his name from the English county he comes from and he is well-known in various areas of the UK and also Holland where he regularly performs, so we are very lucky that when he comes to North Cyprus to see his friends Steve and Denise Bisson, we are treated to his very easy and enjoyable style of country music during his short stay.

Steve and Denise run the Phoenix Line Dance Club and attend the Devon performances with some of the club members so we can always rely on them to get on the floor and show the customers how to line dance, which is very enjoyable. Devon has a wide range of songs which include many old favourites that people can dance to and it is not long before customers are up on the floor enjoying some rock and roll and twisting the night away or trying some of the line dance steps.

Imtiaz, Ashraf and their staff were very busy that evening with a large number of customers and we all enjoyed an excellent meal from the very extensive menu offered by the restaurant.

If you didn’t get a chance to go and see Devon at Al Shaheen there will be another chance to see his performance at Soyz Bar in Ҫatalköy on Sunday 16th June starting at 6.30pm and Rafters Restaurant in Ozanköy on Wednesday evening 19th June. It may be advisable to book at either of the venues to avoid disappointment.

30th June – Sunday	The Royal British Legion, Kyrenia Branch are holding an Armed Forces Day Celebration event at The Courtyard in Karakum from 1pm to 6pm.  There will be stalls, games and entertainment.  English and Indian meals and snacks will be available throughout the day.  Entrance is by ticket @ 5TL which can be obtained from the RBL stall at the Lambousa Saturday market.

BRT began the summer season on Monday 10th June with some changes to their Radio and TV programme schedules. BRT Family is now known as BRT 2 TV and A Cup of Conversation and Vox Pop TV shows have been re-scheduled as below.

This coming week, my guests in the new studio of A Cup of Conversation are Heran Çiftçi, President of the Franco-Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association. Next to her is Stephanie Corbel, the Vice President of the group.

We talk about the association and their activities including the forthcoming Music Day on Wednesday 19th of June. To find out how these ladies build bridges between the TRNC and France, tune in this Tuesday 18th June at 12.10pm to BRT 2 TV.

BRT News is now known by its old name BRT 1 TV and BRT Family TV is back to BRT 2 TV.

A Cup Of Conversation TV show is now recorded in the Oval Studio at BRT in Lefkoşa. The Oval Studio has a stage, a small seating area in the form of an amphitheatre and will allow larger groups and guests to be there for Can Gazi’s interviews. Can’s Show, “A Cup of Conversation” will now be broadcast on Tuesdays at 12.10pm.

Engin Dervişağa’s TV show, “Vox Pop” will now be broadcast on Mondays at 12.10pm and will be a very enjoyable series of interviews with people about their lives or interests set in appropriate locations.

Bayrak International Radio will also see the return of news bulletins broadcast in English, Greek, German, French, Arabic and Russian.

PRIME MINISTER SIBER AND MINISTERS COME INTO OFFICE TODAY

The new Prime Minister of the Interim Government Sibel Siber is coming into office today.

According to the information given by the Prime Ministry Press and Public Relations Office, Prime Minister Siber will start her mission at 09:00 at the Prime Ministry today.

Siber is the first woman Prime Minister in the TRNC.

Prime Minister Dr. Sibel Siber, Foreign Minister Kutlay Erk, Finance Minister Zeren Mungan, Minister of Interior and Local Administrations Gülsün Yücel, Minister of Labour and Social Security Aziz Gürpınar, Minister of National Education, Youth and Sport Asım İdris, Minister of Public Works and Communications Dr. Ismail Basarir, Minister of Health Nuri Gökşin, Minister of Economy and Energy ATA Ahmet Raşit, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Sami Dayıoğlu, Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture Mehmet Harmanci will participate in the new government.

MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: “BEGINNING EXPLORATORY DRILLING IN BLOCK 12 IS AN UNFORTUNATE DEVELOPMENT”

South Cyprus’s beginning illegal hydrocarbon exploratory drilling in block 12 in the Eastern Mediterranean which is the so called exclusive economic zone was described as ‘an unfortunate development’ by the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Pointing out that the Greek side’s seismic exploration activities in areas which the TRNC government has given license to the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPC) has been learned, the Ministry has evaluated these provocative steps which were turned into a new dimension as an unacceptable approach which is increasing the tension in the region despite all warnings.

It was expressed in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that in the period when the negotiation preparations are continuing, the Greek Cypriots’ negative statements related to their unwillingness towards restarting the negotiations and the continuation of actions increasing the tension between the two sides indicate that the Greek Cypriot side is insincere towards a solution and stability.

The statement stressed that Turkish Cypriots who are the joint owners of the island have also equal and inseparable rights over exploring, drilling and operating natural gas within the sea province of the island like in all issues and it was stressed that violation of Turkish Cypriots’ rights cannot be allowed by creating a fait accompli policy.

HOLLANDE ASKED ANASTASIADIS NOT TO PREVENT OPENING OF CHAPTER ABOUT TURKEY

The leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration, Nikos Anastasiadis, came together with President of France, Fransu Hollande, in Paris yesterday.

It was stated that the French President Hollande asked Anastasiadis not to prevent the opening of the 22^nd regional policy chapter in the Turkey-EU accession negotiations.

Publishing that this chapter will be opened on 26^th June, Greek a Cypriot newspaper stated that after the meeting of Hollande and Anastasiadis the Greek Cypriot side replied positively to Paris and will accept the opening of the chapter.

Turkish Lira does not reflect the economic growth – not yet!

Turkey’s tough reforms pay off.

Although the economy, after a growth of  8.5 percent in 2011, grew in the past year by “only” 2.6 percent, in 2013 and 2014 the economy should grow again about 4 percent, according to the World Bank.

Rosy growth prospects…

The economic and financial reforms are also honoured by the major rating agencies. After Fitch raised its rating in November 2012, now the credit auditor of Moody’s upgraded the credit rating in the investment-grade range.

Infrastructural projects amounting to the equivalent of about 200 billion Euros – the world’s largest airport included -, the favourable geographic location and a population that is half under 30 years old and wants to consume, could not only support long-term economic growth. Also, the currency which  lately came under some pressure against the Euro could improve.

Last week I went to Chateau Lambousa and brought you news of the Saturday Market and this week I went back to bring you more news of this and also an update on the Girne American University’s (GAU) activities with the Chateau Lambousa Hotel.

I met with Gordon Kent, Director of the Celebrity Hotels Group when he talked about the developments in hand and announced that the Saturday Market will now take place in the Trojan Gardens, this Saturday  the 15th June.

In February 2013, several volunteers got together to find a way to help the North Cyprus health service in relation to emergency requests for blood. Their efforts emerged as the “Save A Life” campaign, and secured sponsorship from both Creditwest Bank and Telsim. The scheme has also been approved by the TRNC Ministry for Health.

The idea is for blood donors who wish to help in an emergency do so by SMS (text). They send their blood group, and nearest hospital to 05428 800 112. Any information sent is completely confidential and no names are given until the donor comes forward to the hospital requesting supplies. The idea behind this scheme is to donate blood only in the event of an emergency. This is where, for whatever reason, the hospital supplies cannot cope.

From February through to March 40 people had signed up to help. Following the launch at the TRNC Ministry for Health there are now over 100 donors on the database – from all of the 8 blood groups. To date we have had 7 requests for blood, of which 6 were completed successfully. In the early days we did not have any AB blood group donors, so could not help in that case. We now have donors for these groups, but would welcome more from all blood groups.

The system operates from one of the 3 Blood Transfusion Centres in: Lefkosa, Famagusta, or Girne. They request blood of a certain type, and we send out the text message to those in our database.

To mark June 14th which is World Blood Day, Telsim will begin to send out text messages requesting others to consider donating blood in an emergency, to help “Save A Life”. If you would like to help us, then when you receive the text, reply to 05428 800 112 stating your blood type, and nearest hospital. That’s all you have to do. If you would like to donate, but don’t know your blood group, pop along to one of the BRS blood donor days, or contact one of the hospitals and give blood there. You can then text the Save A Life number 05428 800 112, with your blood group, and nearest hospital. You will be added to the growing number of volunteer donors within the Save A Life project.

Don’t forget that those who would like to donate on a regular basis, and not just in an emergency, can still join up via the BRS who will keep you informed of the dates and locations of their blood donor days OR pop along to one of the 3 main hospitals and they will be happy to see you!
