On November 24, 2016, a hot new show premiered at Bellapais Abbey entitled ATEŞ and DİVA. It was the brainchild of Demetra George Mustafaoglu, former Miss Oklahoma, Grammy List Nominee and Recipient of the US State Department’s Cultural Diplomacy Award. The show was inspired by friend Didem Çapa of Istanbul who heads the Yaratıcı Çocuklar Dernegi (Creative Children’s Foundation) in conjunction with Demet Sabanci to provide scholarships and education in fine arts for the children of Turkey.
When Demetra spoke of a project near and dear to many, A CLEAN CYPRUS (Temiz Kibris) was born and a fundraising concert was planned soon after their massive Halloween event of 500 at Villa Diva in Çatalköy.
Ms. Capa knew of a great countertenor in Istanbul who sang all forms of music like Demetra and knew they would make a great team. After a warm phone conversation, the two met twice in Istanbul for rehearsals and Demetra sculpted a show with Harun Ateş and her 10 year old protégée Peri Sualp from the English School of Kyrenia. She added the talented local violinist Ammar Dadizade, outstanding TC flutist Burak Beşir and rounded it out with the gifted Istanbul pianist Barıs Büyükyıldırım to bring a first class show to the island; a fully costumed, set designed, orchestrated musical review in Bellapais Abbey!
The FIDDLER on the roof introduced the show then smoke filled the stage to introduce the Phantom sequences and a boat sailed the waters with dimly lit lanterns setting the mood for the night. The Little Mermaid appeared out of a purple shell and won the hearts of onlookers.
Two fun and well known opera arias from Carmen and La Traviata wowed the crowd showing off the vocal expertise of the two leads and Peri returned for well known favorites from Broadway. The music from Tales of Hoffmann in French were next and needed no translation as their beauty and comedy spoke mounds for them especially the show stopping Doll Aria from giant sized dolls.
After intermission the performers danced their way into everyone’s heart with Another Opening Another Show with tuxes and red heart umbrellas, a vision of old Broadway. The trio moved into the classics with Ave Marias. There were piano solos, flute and even the Titanic docked at the abbey for the great pleasure of the audience. Turkish pop and Spanish rounded out the night until the motorcycle was unveiled and the group reached out with Grease’s You’re the One That I Want then bid farewell with Time To Say Goodbye!
It was a thunderous standing continuous ovation with the full house begging for more. The musicians were called back and Peri and Demetra gave a playful rendition of My Favorite Things still to be called back. Bows again and a hope of returning again next year.
The profits went to A CLEAN CYPRUS. More to come in 2017 as under!
The group is departing for a tour in Istanbul beginning at the Pera Palace hotel in Istanbul. Tickets are available through Biletix click here and other shows are planned, all to benefit the children in Turkey who need an outlet to the arts in today’s world.
We wish them much success and congratulate them for bringing out the best of North Cyprus. Bravi tutti, tebrikler and break a leg!
