By Engin Dervişağa…….
I am delighted together with my colleague Qossay Eleyan to bring you our interesting report on “Discovering North Cyprus” from the Sultan Mahmut II library.
This small building is at the eastern end of the Selimiye Mosque square was built in 1829 by Ali Rouhi, the governor of Cyprus on the instructions of Sultan Mahmud II.
It is a one roomed building with a sign over the door in Arabic saying “This is a Library” and the interior walls are decorated with words from the Koran in gilt Arabic letters against a blue background. within which, many books that had been stored here were over 500 years old.
Over 1800 books stored in this library were donated by Sultan Mahmut II as well as many other people of the time These books are mainly of religious subjects, and written in Arabic, Turkish and Persian and many of these extremely valuable manuscripts have been taken to the National Archives “Milli Arsiv” in Girne for preservation and research purposes.
