Ertuğruloğlu: “Anastasiades is trying to unilaterally change the format of the Geneva conference – this cannot be accepted”

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu stated that he believes the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades is trying to unilaterally change the format of the Geneva conference and this cannot be accepted.

Ertuğruloğlu outlined that it was agreed that the Geneva summit will be held with the participation of the Turkish Cypriot side and Greek Cypriot side and the three guarantor countries Turkey, Greece and the UK.

Ertuğruloğlu also added that this initiative is not compatible with the envisaged Bürgenstock format and the UN Secretary General’s goodwill mission.

In his written statement, Minister Ertuğruloğlu indicated that Anastasiades claimed that the “Geneva summit will not be held as five party conference but as a quartet meeting with the participation of the Cyprus Republic and the three guarantor countries.”

Ertuğruloğlu also stressed that Anastasiades claimed that he will go to Geneva as the President of the so-called “Cyprus Republic” and if a map is not submitted, the conference will not be held on 12 January.

Minister Ertuğruloğlu stated that Anastasiades’ statement aims to place obstacles in the way of achieving a result in the meetings. He also underlined that according to the agreement reached on 1 December between the two leaders, and according to the statement of the UN, it is clear who will participate in the summit. Ertuğruloğlu also expressed that UN should not stay silent in front of these initiatives which aim to sabotage the Geneva meetings.

Furthermore, Ertuğruloğlu added “We hope that the Greek Cypriot side gives up these preconditions as soon as possible and come to the table with goodwill and a constructive spirit to concentrate on the result-oriented negotiations.”

Leaders to meet today

President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades will hold another meeting today within the framework of the ongoing talks for a Cyprus settlement.

The key points relating to Territory, Property and the EU were on the agenda.

Özgürgün: “The TRNC and Turkey are fully cooperating to find a solution in Cyprus”

Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün has stated that Turkey is “fully” cooperating with the TRNC towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Özgürgün also spoke about the next phase of negotiations in the Cyprus talks, which will take place in Geneva. “If no result is reached, both the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey will have something to say and must have a ‘B Plan’.”

After his meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım in Ankara, Özgürgün evaluated the search for a solution in Cyprus, the latest developments in the negotiations and bilateral relations with Turkey to the AA correspondent.

Özgürgün also stated that they had looked at the agenda for the Geneva talks in detail, before adding: “I have very positive impressions. I realized that we are in full agreement on the Cyprus issue, financial and economic policies, investments and other internal issues.”

Özgürgün: “Turkish Cypriots and Turkey will never say yes to a solution other than a bizonal solution based on political equality and the equal status of two founding states, and the continuation of Turkey’s full and effective guarantee. However, the Greeks will also never say yes to what we want. They defend the opposite. They want a unitary state and the return of 50,000 Greeks, as well as another 119,000 to the territory we shall return. The result will be our surrender. Therefore, the Greek Cypriot side should give up such demands.”

  1. Surely this article fails to convey the full force of the situation? The real story appears to be in the fourth paragraph, and the headline should read something like “Greek Cypriots try to ban TRNC /KKTC from Geneva Talks” , in order to convey the full extent of Greek Cypriot treachery.

    1. Thank you John for you long range point of view which is sad because if you spent time living and working here in the TRNC you really would understand what is going on and we try to convey this in so many articles and news feeds to a worldwide readership as we can.

We would remind you that this information published is supplied by the TRNC Public Information Office of which you have been a critic in previous messages to us!

  2. Well well well, once again the Greeks are playing silly buggars!!!!!!!!! The Greeks got themselves into this mess when they started the Genocide against the Turkish Cypriots. Now they think they can dictate the conditions. The Turkish Cypriots will not accept conditions agreed in this way. All guarantors MUST be involved at ALL stages.
