Horrific Accident claims three Lives
At least three people were killed in a head-on collision traffic accident on the Girne-Değirmenlik mountain pass today morning.
Tragedy struck when a school bus carrying high school students from Karaağaç village collided head-on with a large truck coming from the opposite direction near a stone quarry at around 7:00am.
An initial police investigation has revealed that the truck had crossed out of its lane, crashing into the bus travelling in the opposite direction.
The students were studying at various high schools in Lefkoşa.
The three killed have been named as the school bus driver Denktaş Mutluer and 16-year-olds Sude Demirkıran and İlayda Yeliz Öztürk……
The remaining 7 passengers on the bus were injured in the accident.
3 of them are said to be in critical condition.
Dozens of citizens rushed to the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State hospital to donate blood for the injured following a call from the health ministry.
Police is continuing its investigation into the accident.
Meanwhile a number of scheduled events across the country have been cancelled.
President Mustafa Akıncı who is currently in Istanbul is cutting his visit short and will be arriving in the TRNC at 8pm.
Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün has also cancelled a trip to Istanbul this evening.

Very very sad how many more lives will be lost until this country does something about the driving standards of its people..
A tragic accident, so sad, yet avoidable. This is the exact stretch of road that my brother gives me a lift to the airport when I return from my visit, and every single time we have either experienced or witnessed other appalling driving. The last time as we came over the brow of a blind hill on that road we had a near miss with a large tourist style coach speeding up the hill overtaking anything in sight & on the wrong side of the road. The driving standards need to be changed, or North Cyprus traffic accident statistics will remain high.
