Çavuşoğlu in the TRNC
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu arrived in the TRNC last night to make evaluations regarding the current negotiation process.
President Mustafa Akıncı will receive the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu today.
Following the meeting, a quartet working meeting will be held with Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün and Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş. The Leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman and the Communal Democracy Party (TDP) Leader Cemal Özyiğit will also participate following the quartet meeting.
Kurtulmuş: “There is hope for reaching a settlement”
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmuş stated that there is hope for reaching a settlement in Cyprus within a certain period of time.
Kurtulmuş, also met with the House of Commons Leader David Lidington MP in the capital city of the UK, London to discuss the Cyprus issue.
Lidington made clear that he appreciated Turkey’s efforts to restart the recently stalled Cyprus negotiations.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Kurtulmuş reiterated that the Turkish side has been pushing ahead with negotiations and solutions in good faith since the Annan Plan in 2004.
Türkeş: “If the Greek Cypriot side continues its attitude, we will not reach a settlement”
Responding to the questions of MPs at the General Assembly of the Parliament, Türkeş stated that the Greek Cypriot side give the appearance of negotiating, but then take every opportunity to escape from the negotiations.
“Despite President Mustafa Akıncı’s good intentions, the efforts of the negotiators and the support of the Turkish government, a reconciliation point could not be found. The expectation was to reach a settlement by the end of 2016. The latest developments show that if the Greek Cypriot side continues with its current attitude, we will not reach a settlement” Türkeş stressed.
Biden encouraged the leaders to continue negotiations
US Vice President Joe Biden has encouraged the leaders to continue the negotiations.
On the official site of the White House, a statement was made regarding Biden’s telephone discussions with President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades the night before.
According to the statement, Biden encouraged Akıncı and Anastasiades to continue the negotiations. The US Vice President expressed his confidence in the leaders’ ability to secure a settlement that would reunify Cyprus as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation for the benefit of all Cypriots.
The 33rd Anniversary of the Establishment of the TRNC celebrated with the reception in Italy
A reception was held in Italy to mark the occasion of the 33rd Anniversary of the Establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. TRNC Representative to Rome, Oktay Öztürk hosted the reception at Bernini Hotel in Barberini Square, the capital of Rome. The new Turkish Ambassador to Italy Murat Salim Esenli, Turkish Vatican Ambassador Prof. Mehmet Paçacı, and several officials joined the reception in the capital city.
In his speech, Öztürk expressed his pleasure in celebrating the 33rd establishment anniversary of the TRNC in Rome.
Öztürk also said that although the TRNC does not have full diplomatic status, it is much more dynamic and older than many states within the EU.
In the reception, Turkish specific foods were offered to the guests and they showed great interest in the Turkish foods and desserts.
