Northern Cyprus Football, Girne Halk Evi Win Erdal Barut Trophy.
By Richard Beale…….
Sunday 2nd October 2016. @ Esentepe Erdal Barut Stadium.
Result : ESENTEPE SK 2 GIRNE HALK EVI SK 3.
Girne Halk Evi (GHE). Won this years Erdal Barut Trophy in a bizarre match where the referee awarded 5 penalties, 3 which scored and 2 missed. (so glad it didn’t go to a penalty shoot out!). The match was never dirty and played in the true sense of a friendly match, perhaps the referee was in a Christmas mood. This is the 3rd year that the Trophy has been competed for, in memory of our late Village and Football Club President who was killed in a car accident in 2013. Esentepe have in fact never won the Trophy but there was some consolation in the Club’s under 15 side which won the Junior Trophy by beating GHE junior’s 5-1.
On a very warm and sunny afternoon the match attracted a decent crowd paying their respects to the late President, GHE who are coached by Ex-Esentepe trainer “Metcha” were worthy winners. Esentepe were unable to recapture the form they showed in their previous friendly match and gave the ball away too much on numerous occasions and were punished for individual errors.
14th min : Esentepe took the lead through Eser who slotted the ball pass the GHE keeper on the left after good work by Huseiyn whose cross bisected the visitors defenders.
22nd min : GHE equalised when a long through ball split the Esentepe defence enabling a GHE forward to run on unchallenged and shoot past Ali.
26 mins : Esentepe tall defender Firat conceded a penalty bringing down his opponent but GHE missed the penalty when Ali dived to his left to make a fine diving save.
37 mins : GHE were not to be denied, as again Firat was the culprit, this time handling the ball for another penalty and on this occasion the spot kick was converted.
57 mins : Esentepe were awarded a penalty, this time after a Başak scissor kick was charged down by a GHE defender, but apparently with his arms. Hüseyin took the resulting spot kick, which brought a fine save from the GHE keeper.
72 mins ; Esentepe’s new striker Tacettın hit the post with a free kick from just outside the area.
73 mins : Esentepe finally scored when Başak scored from the spot to make the score 2-2.
Just when you thought the match would be decided on a penalty shoot out, the referee had other ideas when in the 82nd minute he awarded GHE their third penalty after Ali had brought down a GHE player. Despite Ali’s strong and loud protests ( I thought it was a penalty), the kick stood and was subsequently converted and GHE won the match 3-2 and also the Trophy.
Esentepe Davut Kansu made only two replacements from the bench, so the team that played is probably near enough the side he will pick when the season eventually starts. This Season the Coach has around a squad of 23 players to choose from. He has many options as opposed to the Coach last season, who could hardly scrape together 16 players.
HÜSEYIN despite blotting his copybook by missing a penalty was Esentepe’s best player. On a hot day he was always available in space and was behind a number of the team’s moves.
ESENTEPE TEAM :
Ali (gk) : Muhammed (Emre Soytürk 45 mins), Firat, Nersin, Asil : Umar, Uğurcan, Hüseyin, Eser (Emrah 60 mins) : Başak : Tacettın.
